Where should I start?
If you want the core EMP saga: start with Breakdown → Escape → Resistance and then follow the Dark Road series in order.
If you like small-town survival drama: Impact → Survival → Endurance → Confrontation.
If you prefer ocean and Florida Keys survival: Zero Hour → Dead Calm → Dead Reckoning → Savage Shores.
If you're ready for Ben's later journey home: continue Dark Road through Reckoning, Restitution, Forsaken, and finish with Sanctuary → Breakthrough before moving into Reclamation → Descent.
If you want something outside apocalypse: try standalone Portral or tropical thriller The Last Beat.
Author bio
Bruno Miller is a military veteran and survival-minded storyteller who has turned "what if everything stopped working tomorrow?" into a full career. He’s best known for the long-running Dark Road series, the Cloverdale books, and newer projects like Dark Waters and The Durango Chronicles.
Before he was writing about EMP strikes and ruined highways, he spent years in uniform. That experience, plus a lifelong interest in preparedness and time spent outdoors, shows up on almost every page. His characters don’t magically find gear or skills when they need them; they pack, practice and plan the way real people do.
Writing started as a side project. Between work, family and the usual demands of everyday life, he found himself sketching "what if" scenes about fathers and kids trying to get home after a disaster. Those early ideas eventually coalesced into Ben Davis, a former Army Ranger on a camping trip with his teenage son Joel when the lights go out for good.
In 2018 he released Breakdown, the first Dark Road novel, and readers quickly latched onto its mix of practical detail and family stakes. What began as a single survival story grew into a fifteen-book arc that follows Ben, Joel, Allie and the rest of their crew across a wrecked United States and back again, through mountains, back roads, moonshiner camps and encounters with extremist gangs.
Not long after that, Miller turned his attention to the small town of Cloverdale, Indiana. The Cloverdale series starts with Impact, where Vince Walker and his son Cy are caught in Indianapolis the instant nuclear-driven EMPs hammer the grid. Across four books, the Walkers and their neighbors try to hold together a farming community under pressure from fire, famine and marauders, giving readers a grounded look at what staying put might really require.
He later pushed the same apocalypse out to sea with Dark Waters. Those books follow Spencer Hayes, his girlfriend Kate and their dog Finn as they try to survive in the Florida Keys and along the battered Atlantic coast after the blasts. Instead of trucks and back roads, the challenges involve small boats, sketchy harbors, storms you can’t track on a screen and the kind of people desperate enough to raid anything that still floats.
As the Dark Road journey reached its conclusion, Miller wasn’t quite done with Ben Davis. The Durango Chronicles picks up after the cross-country odyssey, exploring what it means to stop, claim a piece of ground in the Colorado high country and fight to keep it. Around the same time he launched the Jon Marzett Adventure line, starting with The Last Beat, a tropical thriller about a burned-out Miami detective who takes a sheriff’s job in the Keys and discovers his new "quiet" town is soaked in cartel money.
Across all of these series, a few patterns repeat. Families, not lone wolves, sit at the center of the action. Dogs matter. Guns, gear and tactics are handled with a working person’s eye for what fails, what breaks and what can actually be carried all day. Moral questions—who you help, who you leave, what you’re willing to do for your kids—are treated as seriously as shootouts or storms.
When he’s not writing, Miller likes to spend his downtime with his wife and kids, fishing, or getting in some range time. That mix of family, time outside and quiet preparation is exactly what he gives his characters, too. His books read like long answers to a simple question: if the worst really did happen, what kind of person would you want to be?
