Series background & context
Cliff Hardy is the series Peter Corris built his name on, and it is easy to see why. Hardy is a Sydney private investigator, a working gumshoe rather than a glamorous genius. He has been a soldier, a boxer, an insurance investigator, and finally a man who makes a living taking other people's problems seriously. The books usually start with a job that sounds almost manageable, a missing person, a protective watch, a worried family, a strange sighting, and then widen into murder, corruption, or a piece of Sydney history that somebody wants forgotten.
Sydney is not just the backdrop here. It is the point. Hardy lives and works in a city of beaches, pubs, terraces, clubs, courts, building sites, and back-room deals. One case might take him from Glebe to the Harbour Bridge, another from seedy coastal suburbs to the offices of developers, politicians, or lawyers. Books like The Empty Beach, The Washington Club, and Deep Water show how much the series depends on place. The city changes across the decades, and Hardy changes with it, but Corris never lets the local detail feel decorative.
Hardy himself is a big part of the appeal. He gets hit, conned, outmanoeuvred, and underpaid on a regular basis. He drinks too much in some phases of the series, makes mistakes, and has a habit of walking into situations that a more cautious man would leave alone. But he also has a strong sense of decency. He is not sentimental and he is not clean, yet he keeps returning to the same basic idea: if someone is being lied to, used, or pushed around, he will keep digging.
He keeps going.
That makes the books feel hardboiled without feeling empty. The recurring tensions are not just about who killed whom. They are about class, money, old loyalties, police pressure, political shortcuts, family damage, and the way a city hides its rough edges in plain sight. Even the short story collections, Heroin Annie and Other Cliff Hardy Stories, The Big Drop, Taking Care Of Business, Forget Me If You Can, and The Big Score, carry that same mix of wit, damage, and stubbornness.
You can read many of the Hardy books on their own, but reading them in order gives you something extra. Hardy ages. His body pays bills he would rather ignore. His relationships shift. Later books have more reflection in them without losing the punch. If you want an Australian private eye series that feels lived-in, sharp, and closely tied to its city, this is the one. It even reached the screen when The Empty Beach was adapted for film, but the books are where Hardy really lives.
