Author bio

Chris Fox writes the kind of stories that sound a little wild when you try to explain them out loud, dragons in space, ancient gods, werewolves, and starships, but that mix is a big part of his appeal.

He grew up wanting to be an author and was writing stories by age six. Then real life got in the way for a while. In interviews, Fox has said he stepped away from that plan as a young adult and only came back to it years later, when he sold a short story and remembered how much he liked building worlds.

Before writing full time, he worked in tech. He taught himself iPhone development after leaving a collections job, and later worked on medical software at a Bay Area startup. He likes to point out one very specific detail from that chapter of his life, he helped build the app used to scope Stephen Colbert's ear.

That pivot matters.

Fox did not break in through a slow, tidy path. He finished No Such Thing as Werewolves in 2014, partly because the woman who would become his wife, Lisa, wanted a novel of his to read. The book found readers, the audiobook sales were strong, and by February 2016 he was able to leave his day job and write full time.

Since then he has built a catalog that moves comfortably between subgenres. Readers who want post-apocalyptic horror usually start with the Deathless books, where ancient pyramids, Egyptian gods, werewolves, and zombies all somehow fit together. Readers who want military science fiction tend to land on Destroyer and the larger Void Wraith books. And readers who want pure space fantasy usually head straight for Tech Mage, Void Wyrm, and the rest of The Magitech Chronicles, where spellrifles, dragon gods, and starship battles all share the same page.

He also writes progression fantasy in the Shattered Gods books and, more recently, archaeological thrillers built around Mitch Dinkle and Atlantis. Across all of them, a few things stay steady: fast pacing, big stakes, lots of lore, and a clear love of systems, whether that is magic, technology, mythology, or all three at once.

Fox is just as well known in some circles for his nonfiction. His Write Faster, Write Smarter books, especially 5,000 Words Per Hour, Write to Market, and Plot Gardening, became staples for many indie authors looking for practical advice instead of vague encouragement. He has also shared a lot of that process thinking through talks, podcasts, and a long-running YouTube presence focused on writing craft and publishing.

He's a worldbuilder at heart.

Public bios place him in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. He has written fondly about tabletop gaming, especially Dungeons and Dragons, and that playful love of classes, gear, magic systems, and party dynamics shows up all over his fiction. Even when the stakes are cosmic, his books usually keep one foot in sheer readerly fun.
