Author bio

Cassandra Clare was born Judith Rumelt in Tehran, Iran, to American parents, and spent her early childhood on the move. Before she turned ten she had lived in France, England, Switzerland, and even trekked through the Himalayas in a backpack on her father's shoulders.

Books were the constant in all that travel. She carried novels from apartment to apartment and school to school, and by high school in Los Angeles she was writing her own stories to entertain friends, including a long comic piece called 'The Beautiful Cassandra' that later inspired her pen name.

After college she moved between Los Angeles and New York, working for entertainment magazines and tabloids. Long hours and tight deadlines taught her how to write fast, but it was the time on buses and in coffee shops that she used to sketch out fantasy worlds and character arcs.

For a while those stories lived online in fan communities, where she learned how to pace a chapter, land a cliffhanger, and listen to readers. Eventually she wanted a world of her own, and in 2004 she began drafting City of Bones, imagining demon hunters hidden inside the real Manhattan streets she loved.

That book, published in 2007, introduced Clary Fray, Jace Wayland, and the secret society of Shadowhunters. It grew into The Mortal Instruments, a six book urban fantasy sequence full of angels, demons, queer romance, and found family, and the starting point for what would become the wider Shadowhunter Chronicles.

Clare did not stop with one timeline. The Infernal Devices moved the action to Victorian London, while The Dark Artifices and The Last Hours pushed the saga into Los Angeles and Edwardian England, following new generations of Herondales, Lightwoods, Carstairs, and Blackthorns. Along the way she wrote or co wrote novella sequences like The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, and Ghosts of the Shadow Market that fill in side stories and quiet moments the main novels only hint at.

She has also stepped outside the Shadowhunter world. With Holly Black she co created the middle grade Magisterium series, about a reluctant boy magician at an underground school. More recently she launched the Chronicles of Castellane with Sword Catcher and The Ragpicker King, secondary world fantasies set in a stratified port city full of princes, thieves, and exiled healers.

Across all of these books certain threads repeat. Her stories circle around loyalty, complicated families, first love, and the question of how far you can bend a rule for the people you care about. They are crowded with banter, fashion choices, and small domestic details in between the demon battles.

Clare's work has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been adapted for both film and television, bringing Shadowhunters to a new audience. She now lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, Joshua Lewis, and a rotating cast of cats, still building out imaginary cities from a quiet corner of the real world.
