Series background & context
The Bane Chronicles is a collection of eleven novellas that trace key moments in the long life of Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Co written with Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson, the stories jump across centuries and continents, showing how Magnus keeps getting pulled into other people’s messes.
Some pieces are pure adventure, like his disastrous escapades in Peru or the night he meets Marie Antoinette in revolutionary Paris. Others focus more on Shadowhunter politics, such as the early days of the London Institute, the rise and fall of the Hotel Dumort in New York, or the events leading up to Valentine’s Circle.
The later stories move closer to the main timeline, concentrating on Magnus’s relationship with Alec Lightwood. Readers see their awkward first date, the way Magnus leaves voicemails when they briefly break up, and the choices he makes when faced with raising a warlock child.
Taken together, the novellas sketch a character who can be flamboyant and sarcastic yet deeply loyal and often lonely. They also offer a sideways tour of the Shadowhunter Chronicles, tying together eras from The Infernal Devices through The Mortal Instruments and beyond.
You do not have to read The Bane Chronicles in strict publication order, but many fans pick them up between or after the main novels to fill in context for throwaway lines and side characters. This page lays out the stories so you can decide where they will be most fun for you.
