One of the series' main hooks is the way her mind works, and Davidson builds a lot of humor and tension out of that fact. Cadence wants to do her job, catch the Threefer, and keep her life from turning into a circus. Unfortunately, she keeps attracting attention from killers, colleagues, and men who are much too interested in her for her comfort.

The tone is brisk and odd in the best way. These books are less paranormal than some of Davidson's better-known work, but they have the same love of smart-mouthed heroines, emotional chaos, and situations that keep slipping sideways. The suspense matters, but so do the romantic tangles, the friendships, and the constant feeling that Cadence is improvising her way through a life nobody else could quite handle.

If you want Davidson without vampires or werewolves, but still want the same speed, jokes, and heroine-driven energy, Cadence Jones is a good pick.
