By City of Secrets, London changes the setting in a smart way. Abel and his family are pushed out of bright, dragon-packed Drakopolis and into a hard frontier town that mostly bans dragons except when they can be exploited in rodeos for entertainment. That move keeps the series from feeling repetitive. It also sharpens one of its main concerns, the way powerful people use both animals and kids, then expect everyone else to live with the damage.

These books are full of action, but they are not empty spectacle. Abel keeps growing because he has to make real choices about courage, trust, and what he owes to his family, his friends, and the dragons themselves. The sibling tension matters just as much as the battles, and the series does a good job balancing flashy set pieces with quieter moments of doubt, frustration, and loyalty.

If you want middle grade fantasy that moves quickly and still has something to say, Battle Dragons is an easy series to sink into. The dragons are cool, of course. The real hook is watching Abel learn that bravery is not just about winning a fight, it is about deciding what is worth risking yourself for.
