The Anya Kalinczyk series is urban fantasy with smoke in its lungs and ghosts in its streets. It follows Anya, an arson investigator for the Detroit Fire Department who also happens to be a Lantern, a rare kind of psychic medium. During the day, she studies burn patterns and searches for human causes. At night, she deals with malicious spirits that are far less interested in following the rules.

Detroit matters here. The series places supernatural danger alongside a city dealing with economic hardship, abandoned spaces, anger, memory, and hope. Fires are never just fires, and the dead are never entirely gone. Bickle uses the setting to give Anya's cases real weight, whether she is tracking an unnatural blaze or trying to protect souls that have nowhere else to go.

Anya does not work alone. Her most memorable partner is Sparky, her large salamander familiar, but she also has a loose, eccentric group of paranormal allies. Their investigations mix fire science, folklore, ghost hunting, and detective work. The books have action and dark moments, but there is room for affection, odd humor, and the complications of having people, human and otherwise, depend on you.

Start with Embers. A supernatural arsonist is setting fires around Detroit as part of a plan to summon an ancient fiery force, and Anya must stop the ritual before Devil's Night. The case establishes her work, her abilities, her circle, and the uneasy relationship she has with danger and loss.

• Sparks* raises the stakes through a case that looks like spontaneous human combustion. Anya's search leads toward a celebrity psychic exploiting desperate people, while the threat reaches into her relationships and the city itself. It is a good example of the series' balance of paranormal mystery and personal consequences.

The final entry, Ashes, returns Anya to Detroit with Sparky and Charon of the Underworld. This time, they pursue the destructive fire elemental known as the Nain Rouge during a festival held in its dubious honor. It is a shorter conclusion, but it brings the series back to the fire, folklore, and local unease at its core.

These are fast, close-to-the-ground paranormal investigations. Anya is capable, wary, and sometimes tired of being the person who has to walk toward the flames anyway.
