Author bio
Laura Bickle grew up in rural Ohio, where comic books were a big part of her childhood. She has said she read so many aloud to a favorite Wonder Woman doll that it became a running family image. It fits the books she would later write: grounded places, strange creatures, stubborn women, and a willingness to take the supernatural seriously without losing a sense of fun.
Her path to publishing took a few turns. Bickle earned a master's degree in sociology and criminology from Ohio State University, then an MLIS in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She worked in a public library and later worked with data systems in criminal justice. Those jobs left their mark. Her fiction often pays attention to the practical side of danger: reports, investigations, injuries, old records, and the ordinary work that has to continue while something impossible is happening.
Then she started putting monsters in the margins of everyday life.
Her early urban fantasy novels, Embers and Sparks, introduce Anya Kalinczyk, a Detroit arson investigator who is also a rare spirit medium. Anya has a dangerous job, a salamander familiar named Sparky, and a city full of ghosts that need attention. The stories combine fire investigation, local history, hauntings, and a Detroit setting that feels lived in rather than used as scenery.
Bickle's range gets wider from there. The Hallowed Ones follows an Amish teenager as her sealed community faces a vampire outbreak, while Dark Alchemy begins a weird Western run centered on geologist Petra Dee in supernatural Wyoming. In Pawned, a teen works in a boardwalk pawn shop packed with cursed objects. Flesh takes place around a funeral home and follows a girl who is more comfortable with the dead than with her classmates.
Animals are rarely just decoration in these books.
The Wildlands novels, including Dark Alchemy, Mercury Retrograde, Nine of Stars, Witch Creek, and Phoenix Falling, bring together alchemy, Yellowstone country, old bargains, and a coyote companion. Later series keep finding fresh corners of paranormal fiction: witches and vampires at war in the Crow's Curse books, animal-shifter trouble in the Mane Shift stories, and infernal librarians guarding dangerous books in The Underworld Library.
She also writes as Alayna Williams. Under that name, the Delphic Oracle novels follow Tara Sheridan, a forensic psychologist whose Tarot readings pull her back into high-risk investigations. Across both names, Bickle returns to people who would rather use their skills quietly, but have to step up when their communities, families, or fragile sense of home come under threat.
These days, she continues to write stories about monsters under the stairs, and sometimes reads them to her cats.
