American Injustice Books in Order

American Injustice is the odd series out in SM Reine's catalog, because it leaves the demons and werewolves behind and goes straight into grounded suspense. These are dark contemporary thrillers built around bad systems, buried evidence, and women who realize the official version of events is not the truth.

The books are linked more by mood and theme than by one continuing fantasy plot. In She Killed Him First, a mother is already carrying the secret of a killing when a school shooting rips through her town. In His Memory in Ashes, Eve Everhardt starts asking hard questions after her brother is blamed for a wildfire and dies before he can defend himself. Both stories begin with ordinary people in impossible positions.

That part matters.

Reine writes these books with the same taste for pressure she brings to her urban fantasy. The protagonists are boxed in, the clock is always ticking, and every choice comes with a moral cost. Family history, shame, guilt, and the ways institutions fail people all sit near the center of the story.

So if you come to American Injustice expecting cops who have everything under control, this is not that. These books work better as tense, character-driven investigations where the women at the center have to do the digging themselves, often because telling the full truth would destroy them too.

It is a smaller-scale series than the Descentverse, but not a softer one. Expect sharp hooks, messy decisions, and thrillers that care as much about what a secret does to a person as they do about solving the crime.
