Series background & context

The Alicia Friend series follows Detective Sergeant, later Detective Inspector, Alicia Friend through difficult British murder investigations. Alicia is an unusual lead for a crime thriller. She is bright, analytical, and openly perky, a personality that can unsettle new colleagues but also helps her deal with work that is often brutal.

Her cheerfulness is not the same thing as naivety. Alicia sees patterns, reads people, and keeps working when other investigators have settled for the obvious answer. The books let that contrast do a lot of the work, placing a friendly, sometimes irritating detective in cases involving serial killers, kidnappings, political pressure, old violence, and families with much to hide.

The series begins with His First His Second. Alicia joins the hunt for a killer targeting young women during a bleak northern English winter. She must also contend with Richard, the father of a missing victim, whose private investigation complicates the official case. It is the best place to meet Alicia and her colleague, Detective Inspector Donald Murphy.

Alicia is nice. The cases are not.

In In Black in White, a British diplomat is killed in the United States, and Alicia is sent to observe an FBI investigation that grows stranger and more politically charged. With Courage with Fear brings her back into action after desk duty, as a terror suspect interview opens onto a wider pattern of coordinated attacks.

The later books give the series more room to vary its mysteries. A Friend In Spirit starts with a psychic reading, a murdered grandfather, and a political figure watching the investigation closely. To Hide To Seek is a shorter locked-room mystery in an English country mansion, with six suspects and a teacher murdered in a sealed room. In A Flood of Bones, floodwaters reveal bodies from an old killing spree, while a new murder makes a West Yorkshire community increasingly volatile.

The setting matters. Northern England's winter streets, rural towns, family homes, pubs, and official offices give the cases a grounded police-procedural feel. Alicia's relationships, especially her evolving professional bond with Murphy, provide a continuing thread as her career changes and the personal cost of the work becomes harder to ignore.

Start with His First His Second if you want the ongoing character story in order. Readers looking for a brief, more self-contained puzzle can also try To Hide To Seek, but the main books have more impact when Alicia's earlier cases and hard-won experience are already in view.
