Series background & context
The Witchblade Chronicles, sometimes called the Witch Born books, blend Elizabethan politics with dangerous magic and slow burn romance. The stories are set in a world where witchcraft is real, punishable by death and tightly tangled with the crown’s spies.
The opening novel, Honor Bound, follows Isabel, the capable assistant to a well known London apothecary. Years earlier she walked away from a passionate but complicated marriage to royal spy Sir Nicholas Merritt. She has a secret he can never learn: she is a witch, and her powers are growing. When Nicholas walks back into her shop on the trail of a plot against Queen Elizabeth, their reunion forces her to choose between anonymity and the only man she has ever loved.
Nicholas has been searching for Isabel for years, not only because of unfinished business between them but also because her talents make her valuable in a world where magic is feared and hunted. As they are drawn into a conspiracy that could topple the court, old hurts resurface. Isabel must decide how much of herself she is willing to reveal to a man whose loyalty is split between his queen and his heart.
Kiss of Ash shifts focus to Pippa Ingleside, a young woman so desperate to escape her abusive uncle that she runs away dressed as a boy. Her fledgling powers flare at exactly the wrong time, saving her but proving she is not as ordinary as she thought. She finds work in the household of Lord Ashbourne as a page, keeping her sex and her magic carefully hidden. The more time she spends with her guarded, watchful employer, the more complicated those secrets become.
When Pippa’s only friend disappears and turns up dead, she ends up at Ashbourne’s side investigating a knot of courtly grudges, witch hunters and old enemies. The tension comes not just from the mystery, but from the constant risk of exposure in a land where a whisper of sorcery can lead to the gallows.
Across the series, Archer leans into the contrasts of the era: glittering court masques set against smoky back rooms, nobles who will use magic when it suits them while burning witches in public, and heroines who refuse to stay safely in the shadows. Expect high stakes, dangerous secrets and romances tested by the simple fact that loving a witch can get you killed.
