Series background & context
The Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Trilogy introduces one of CJ Archer’s earliest Victorian heroines and lays the groundwork for several later series. Set in late nineteenth century London, the books follow Emily, a seventeen year old spirit medium who can see and touch the dead.
Emily works séances with her older sister, Celia, partly to pay the bills and partly because there is no way to pretend she is normal. Seeing ghosts in proper society is awkward enough. Accidentally releasing something far worse is another matter. When a shape shifting demon slips into the mortal world during what should have been a routine sitting, Emily suddenly has far more to worry about than skeptical clients.
Assigned to help her is Jacob Beaufort, a young man who died months earlier and has not been able to move on. The administrators of the Otherworld pair him with Emily in the hope that together they can send the demon back and repair the damage. Jacob is not your typical guide, though. He was murdered, his memories are patchy, and he is just as baffled by his place in the afterlife as Emily is by her powers.
Over the course of the trilogy, starting with The Medium and continuing through Possession and Evermore, Emily’s world widens beyond dimly lit parlors. She learns more about her mysterious birth, digs into secrets her mother has never explained and crosses paths with people who will later anchor the Freak House and Ministry of Curiosities books. Jacob’s story is just as central, as he unpicks who killed him and why he is tied so tightly to a girl who is still alive.
The tone balances eerie hauntings and a genuine thread of sweetness. Archer lets Emily and Jacob’s feelings build slowly against a backdrop of foggy streets, crumbling graveyards and drawing rooms full of people who want answers from the dead but have no idea what they are inviting in.
Readers who enjoy Victorian settings, gentle horror elements and impossible romances that still find a way to work tend to start their tour of Archer’s interconnected world here. The trilogy stands alone but also offers a satisfying first stop before moving on to Freak House or the Ministry of Curiosities.
