Series background & context

The Ministry of Curiosities series is one of CJ Archer’s best known Victorian fantasy runs, built around a young necromancer trying to stay alive in a London that would happily hang her for what she can do. It ties directly to the Emily Chambers and Freak House books, but you can also jump in here without feeling lost.

The story begins in The Last Necromancer. Charlotte “Charlie” Holloway has spent five years disguised as a boy, living as a thief in the slums after her father cast her out for raising a spirit by accident. When one theft too many lands her in prison, her only way out involves using the power she swore never to touch again. That choice draws the attention of people hunting for a necromancer, and only one of them gets to her first.

Lincoln Fitzroy is the cold, controlled head of a secret organization that reports directly to the crown. His ministry investigates supernatural threats and quietly removes them before they cause scandal or catastrophe. He believes Charlie can lead him to the mysterious necromancer he is looking for. Discovering that the ragged street boy he captured is actually the very woman he needs forces him to rethink both his assumptions and his plans.

Through Her Majesty’s Necromancer, Beyond the Grave and the later volumes, Charlie goes from reluctant captive to essential member of the ministry. She moves into Lichfield Towers, an isolated house filled with other misfits and talented troublemakers, and slowly builds something that looks suspiciously like a family. The cases she and Lincoln tackle involve grave robbers, stitched corpses, vengeful ghosts, shape changers and threats that reach into the royal household itself.

At the same time, Charlie digs into her own past. Questions about her mother, about how rare her abilities really are and about why there might be more than one necromancer in the world keep resurfacing. Lincoln’s history is equally complicated, and secrets about his parentage and connections at court press in from all sides.

The series balances mystery plots with an ongoing, slow burn relationship between Charlie and Lincoln. Archer lets trust build in increments as they argue, misstep and occasionally save one another’s lives. The found family around them provides humor and heart, making the darker moments hit harder without tipping into despair.

Readers who like long running series with a consistent cast, Victorian atmosphere and a blend of paranormal suspense and romance usually find plenty to sink into in the Ministry of Curiosities.
