Series background & context
The Lord Hawkesbury's Players series drops you into the noisy, foxed world of Elizabethan playhouses, where actors scramble for patrons, reputations are fragile and everyone is one wrong rumor away from ruin. Instead of following nobles at court, the books stay close to the people who live by the stage and the men and women orbiting their world.
In the first book, A Secret Life (originally published as Her Secret Desire), impoverished playwright Minerva Peabody knows the odds are stacked against her. Women are not meant to write plays, let alone sell them. So she cuts her hair, invents a male persona and persuades sea captain Robert Blakewell to pose as the author. His reasons for agreeing have nothing to do with art and everything to do with hunting the man who ruined his sister. Their bargain tangles careers, family honor and a very inconvenient attraction.
The second story, A Tempting Life (first published as Scandal's Mistress), moves the spotlight off the stage and into the drawing rooms that fund it. Leo, Baron Warhurst, needs to marry money to rescue his decaying estate, but his plans implode when his unmarried sister becomes pregnant. To contain the scandal he turns to Alice Croft, a talented seamstress tied to Lord Hawkesbury's company. She agrees to spy for him, only to find that the gruff nobleman is nothing like the cold figure he shows society.
A third book follows another couple whose lives are bound up with the troupe. Each romance plays out against rehearsals, backstage feuds and the constant threat of moral censure. Lovers steal moments in cramped tiring rooms and quiet galleries, knowing one careless word from the wrong person could end a career or worse.
Running through all three novels is the sense that theatre people live on a knife edge. Players rely on the protection of Lord Hawkesbury’s name, yet they must still navigate erratic audiences, rival companies and the whims of the crown’s censors. Cameo appearances from William Shakespeare and nods to real companies of the time give the books a light brush of historical detail without slowing the stories.
If you like romance threaded through with disguises, family secrets and the bustle of an Elizabethan playhouse, this series offers a self contained corner of CJ Archer’s world that still connects loosely to her later Assassins Guild books.
