Whispers of the Gods is Steve Feasey's move into full epic fantasy. The series begins with Lann, a boy who knows very little about his past and even less about the part he is meant to play in his world's future. After a savage attack tears his life apart, he is pushed toward the Dreadblade, an ancient sword forged to fight terrible monsters. From there, the books open into a bigger story about fading gods, dark magic, murder, and the cost of destiny.

The sword is not just a gift. It is a burden.

Lann's side of the story is balanced by Princess Astrid, who is dealing with a crisis of her own after her father is killed and her brother is left under suspicion. That gives the series two strong lanes at once. One is a monster-haunted journey, full of magic, old powers, and dangerous new responsibilities. The other is a kingdom under strain, where loyalty, inheritance, and survival are all tangled together. Lann is also guided by the witch Fleya, whose knowledge of older forces helps ground the stranger parts of the world.

The larger threat comes through Kelewulf and the spread of dark art. By the time Dark Blade moves into Dark Art, the story has grown from a single murder and a few terrible creatures into a wider struggle over kingdoms, old gods, and whether the darkness pressing at the edges of the world can be held back at all. Feasey keeps that scale readable by staying close to a few key characters instead of drowning the series in lore.

The tone is serious, but the prose stays clear and brisk, so the books feel approachable even when the stakes get very large. What makes the books interesting is the tension between fate and choice. Lann is handed a role he did not ask for. Astrid is pushed toward power she does not particularly want. Kelewulf is driven by a darker kind of need, one that turns grievance into something far more dangerous.
