Mutant City is Steve Feasey's dystopian science fiction series, set long after a chemical war nearly destroyed the world. Rush's life changes fast.

As the story opens up, Rush is joined by Anya, Jax, Flea, and Brick, each carrying a power that makes them valuable, dangerous, and very hard to hide. Their bond gives the series its heart. They are not a polished team. They are frightened, stubborn, funny, and often hungry. That makes them feel like kids first, mutant weapons second.

The setting matters just as much as the powers. Feasey builds a harsh world of ruined land, surveillance, strict social borders, and constant fear. City Four stands as a symbol of safety for some people and oppression for others, while the Agency for the Regulation of Mutants and President Melk represent the cold side of science and control. The books keep returning to the same uncomfortable question, who gets protected, and who gets used.

It has a superhero spark, but the series stays gritty.

The first book, Mutant City, works as both an origin story and a chase story, with Rush trying to understand his past while enemies close in from different sides. Mutant Rising takes the idea further. The group is no longer just running. Their powers are growing, their choices are getting bigger, and the fight starts to look less like simple survival and more like resistance. That shift gives the sequel a broader scope without losing the pressure on the characters themselves.

Another thing Feasey handles well here is the mix of big themes and quick pacing. The series touches on genetic engineering, state control, class division, and prejudice, but it never stops feeling like an adventure. If you want post-apocalyptic YA with mutant powers, a strong underdog streak, and a found-family group learning how to fight back, Mutant City and Mutant Rising give you plenty to dig into.
