The Welkin Weasels series is an animal fantasy with a lively, funny streak. It begins in Welkin, a land abandoned by humans long ago. With the people gone, the animals have made their own societies, and the stoats have become the hard-handed rulers. Life is especially rough for weasels like Sylver, who has no interest in quietly accepting their rule.

In Thunder Oak, Sylver and his small band of outlaws pursue an unlikely plan: find the missing humans and bring them back. The hope is that people might repair the sea walls and change life in Welkin. It is a big mission for a group armed with nerve, local knowledge, and very limited resources.

The animals take the story seriously, even when the books are having fun.

The early novels follow Sylver through rat-held sewers, ruined buildings, dangerous seas, and the tense politics of other animal groups. Castle Storm sends the group into a conflict involving rival squirrel communities, while Windjammer Run takes them onto the sea as they continue the search for humans. Pursuit, odd alliances, and the threat of the stoat authorities keep the journeys moving.

Later books shift toward Montagu Sylver, now a detective, and open the series into comic mysteries and international adventures. In Gaslight Geezers, a disappearance brings him into trouble in the city. Vampire Voles sends him after a strange infestation, while Heastward Ho! takes him east in search of stolen jade shoes and into a larger political mess.

Welkin is a world where animal behavior, human-style institutions, and playful word choices sit side by side. The series has chases, villains, travel, and jokes, but its long-running concerns are freedom, loyalty, and what happens when a few small creatures refuse to be pushed around. Start with Thunder Oak for the full arc, though the detective-led later books can also work as lighter stand-alone adventures.
