Sergeant Jack Crossman Books in Order

The Sergeant Jack Crossman novels are historical military adventures set during the Crimean War and its aftermath. Their hero is Alexander Kirk, better known as “Fancy Jack” Crossman. He is the illegitimate son of a Scottish baronet, raised with expectations of gentility but never allowed to forget the limits others place on him.

Crossman chooses a rougher path. He serves with a mixed, irregular group of soldiers, including people who do not fit neatly into the army's usual social order. That makes his unit useful for jobs that are too risky, too secretive, or too inconvenient for more conventional officers.

War is muddy, hungry, cold work in these books.

The series begins with The Devil's Own, as Crossman and his men arrive in the Crimean campaign. They take on covert work around the Battle of the Alma, while the wider conflict supplies the confusion, poor planning, and human cost. The Valley of Death brings him close to the Battle of Balaclava, and Soldiers in the Mist follows missions behind enemy lines as the campaign drags on.

The later books continue through the disastrous winter after Inkerman, the siege operations around Sevastopol, and later imperial conflicts. Titles such as The Winter Soldiers, Attack on the Redan, Brothers of the Blade, Rogue Officer, and Kiwi Wars move Crossman through changing campaigns, but keep the focus on the people who must carry out orders on the ground.

Kilworth does not make the army a tidy machine. Officers can be vain or careless, supply systems fail, and courage does not always bring a fair result. Crossman survives through nerve, practical judgment, and loyalty to the soldiers beside him. That gives the books the pace of battlefield adventure while leaving room for anger at the waste around him.
