Series background & context
Veil/Dixon Security begins with one of Kate Allenton's best simple hooks: a woman goes to Salem, gets a psychic reading she does not want, and comes home to find out the impossible might actually be real. From there, the series opens into ghosts, clairvoyance, murder investigations, and the growing role of Dixon Security in helping handle the fallout.
Sophie Masterson is the heart of the early books. She does not step into this world because she was chasing the supernatural. It lands on her. That makes the awakening-gift storyline easy to buy, because Sophie reacts the way a normal person might when the dead start talking and a warning starts coming true.
The veil lifts, and life gets much messier.
As the series develops, it widens beyond Sophie without losing the connected-world feeling. Friends, security specialists, and other women close to the core cast step into the spotlight, while the mix of romance and investigation stays steady. Cops, private security, missing people, stalkers, and coven-related danger all find their way into the plot.
The tone lands between paranormal romance and mystery. It is not as cozy as the Cree Blue books and not as dark as Fractured Minds. Instead, it lives in that middle space where gifts are real, danger is active, and love has to grow while everyone is under stress.
If you like psychic awakenings, ghostly clues, and protective heroes with security backgrounds, start with Lifting the Veil and continue in order. The relationships and supernatural rules build cleanly from book to book.
