Series background & context

Usborne Puzzle Adventures is an illustrated interactive series that mixes a fast-moving story with puzzles built into the action. Instead of simply reading from beginning to end, readers are asked to spot clues, crack codes, solve visual problems, and use the answers to keep the adventure moving.

Justin Somper’s contribution is The Pyramid Plot. It follows Jaz and Gusto on a trip to Egypt that goes badly off schedule when they find themselves caught between crooks, an ancient treasure trail, and a suspicious woman called Iona Fortune. The setting brings together pyramids, strange symbols, hidden passages, and a mystery that needs active problem-solving.

The puzzles are part of the story rather than a break from it. A map, riddle, cipher, or picture detail may reveal the next step, help the characters avoid trouble, or explain what is really going on. Extra clues are available for readers who get stuck, while solutions appear at the back.

It is reading with a detective hat on.

The format makes these books especially good for readers who like to pause, look closely, and work things out for themselves. The illustrations carry plenty of information, so it helps to notice small details rather than race ahead. The stories are playful but still give the characters real problems to solve.

The Third Usborne Book of Puzzle Adventures collects The Pyramid Plot alongside two other Puzzle Adventure stories, The Invisible Spy and The Emerald Conspiracy. It works as a longer puzzle-filled volume for readers who want several mysteries in one book. Since each adventure has its own cast and setup, the collection can also be dipped into one story at a time.

The series is built for participation. You are not just watching Jaz and Gusto uncover a plot in Egypt, you are helping them interpret the evidence and make progress. That gives The Pyramid Plot the feel of a small escape-room challenge wrapped inside an adventure story.

Start with The Pyramid Plot if you want Somper’s original entry in the series. Choose The Third Usborne Book of Puzzle Adventures if you would rather begin with a collection and have more puzzles waiting after the first case.
