Series background & context

Enemies Of The Prince is a teen fantasy series about power, grief, and the danger of ruling before you are ready. Its main setting is All Archenfield, one of several rival princedoms in a world with a medieval feel, where a ruler’s household can be as dangerous as an invading army.

The story begins in Allies & Assassins. Sixteen-year-old Jared becomes Prince of All Archenfield after the mysterious death of his older brother. He has inherited a title, a court, and a long list of people who expect him to obey old rules. What he does not have is a clear sense of whom he can trust.

Asta Peck gives the series another way into the mystery. She is a sharp, strong-willed girl from the settlements who works as the Physician’s apprentice. While Jared must learn how to act like a prince, Asta uses observation and practical thinking to help investigate the death that put him on the throne. Their partnership sits at the center of the books.

Trust is always in short supply.

The first novel works partly as a murder investigation. Jared and Asta have to look beyond court gossip and ceremony to work out who might have wanted the previous prince dead. Their search brings them into contact with the Council of Twelve, a group meant to advise the ruler but powerful enough to shape, protect, or threaten him.

In A Conspiracy of Princes, the pressure widens. Jared must seek support from neighboring kingdoms as hostile rulers threaten Archenfield, while enemies closer to home work to undermine his authority. The series keeps its focus on the difficult choices behind alliances. A helpful offer may come with a price, and leaving someone in charge does not mean they are loyal.

These are detailed, high-stakes adventures, but the emotional thread is simple. Jared is grieving his brother and trying not to be used. Asta wants the truth and refuses to be dismissed because of where she comes from. Together, they face a world of secret plans, shifting loyalties, and decisions that affect far more than their own futures.

Start with Allies & Assassins. The second book builds directly on its unanswered questions, political tensions, and relationships.
