Series background & context

The Vampirates books imagine a future in which the oceans have risen and piracy has returned. Into that rough, dangerous world come Grace and Connor Tempest, teenage twins who have grown up with their father in Crescent Moon Bay on Australia’s east coast.

After their father dies, the twins leave town in his old boat. A violent storm wrecks it and separates them at sea. Connor is rescued by the pirate ship Diablo, where he is drawn into the loud, rule-breaking world of Captain Molucco Wrathe and the wider Pirate Federation.

Grace is picked up by a very different ship. Its deck is red, its captain is hard to understand, and its crew includes vampires who live by strict rules. Her path brings her close to Lorcan Furey and to the unsettling secret behind the legendary Vampirates. Grace wants to find Connor, but she also begins to make a place for herself aboard this strange vessel.

The twins are separated, but their stories keep pulling together.

Across the series, Connor learns what being a pirate costs. He wants adventure and belonging, yet he is repeatedly asked to choose between loyalty, safety, and his own sense of right and wrong. Grace discovers abilities and connections that make her important to the Vampirate world, even as she faces its hungriest and most ambitious members.

The central threat comes from Sidorio, a renegade Vampirate who rejects restraint and wants to build power through fear. His rise turns personal danger into a wider conflict between pirates, Vampirates, and the Nocturnals. Later books widen the story from shipboard survival and family secrets to alliances, betrayals, raids, and open war across the oceans.

The tone is adventurous and dark without losing its sense of fun. There are sea chases, sword fights, rival crews, hidden histories, and supernatural rules to learn. But the heart of the series is Grace and Connor’s bond. Even when they take very different paths, they are trying to find their way back to each other.

Begin with Demons of the Ocean and read in order. Each novel develops the wider conflict and gives earlier friendships, rivalries, and mysteries more weight.
