Cheryl Brooks builds each contemporary romance around a pairing that looks mismatched from the outside, or feels impossible to the people living it. Age gaps, grief, depression, awkward timing, sexual baggage, family pressure, and long-shot attraction all show up here. What makes the series work is that Brooks treats those complications as the story, not as decoration.

In Unbridled, farrier Travis York falls for Miranda Jackson before he understands why she keeps a wedding ring on her hand. Miranda is a widow, a mother, and a horse breeder, and her life is already full. Their age difference matters, but so do grief and the demands of caregiving. Brooks gives the romance plenty of heat, yet the book is really asking whether two people at different stages of life can want the same future.

Uninhibited begins with a missed connection and a lost napkin, which sounds light until Brooks folds in loneliness, shame, and the fear of repeating old mistakes.
