Some of these characters are connected to families from the original series, so the books feel like a continuation of the same world rather than a fresh reboot.

The first book, Maverick, follows Larsanken Tshevnoe, known as Larry, a man so overwhelmingly attractive that sincerity is hard to trust. His closest ally is Althea Banadänsk, an empath who can tell whether a woman truly wants him for himself. That setup gives the romance a different flavor from a standard instant-attraction story. Brooks starts with history, friendship, and feelings that have been sitting in the background for too long. Once danger arrives, those feelings have to move into the open.

Mystic takes a slightly darker route. Anthropologist Sulaksha Enduran is already carrying grief and unanswered questions when Zetithian mystic Aidan Banadänsk enters her investigation. Here the series leans harder into conspiracy, secrets, and planetary stakes, which shows how flexible this spin-off can be. Then Captive turns toward rebellion and revolution, pairing the angry, impulsive Moe Tshevnoe with Klara Tavock, the woman who captures him and accidentally gives him a cause worth fighting for.

Freedom is still a live issue in this universe.

That matters because the series is not only about who falls for whom. It is also about what kind of future these younger characters are inheriting. They live in the shadow of slavery, political corruption, and the near-erasure of their people, so even the most personal choices carry extra weight. Brooks keeps the tone lively and romantic, but there is always a sense that larger forces are pressing in from the edges of the story.

If you already know the original series, the payoffs land harder. If you do not, these books still work as adventurous alien romances with strong couple-focused plots. Expect friends becoming lovers, psychic gifts, rescues, rebels, and a cast that is trying to build something better than the world handed to them.
