Series background & context

The Undercurrents trilogy is where Traci Hunter Abramson’s fictional universe really begins. These books follow an Olympic bound swimmer whose life is split in two, the one she had before witnessing a murder and the one she is forced to live afterward.

In Undercurrents we meet Shaye Kendall, a young athlete in the witness protection program after seeing her boyfriend killed. A new name, a new town, and strict rules are supposed to keep her safe. What they really do is isolate her. She cannot explain her past, she cannot share her faith openly with new friends, and she definitely cannot get too close to the family of a high profile senator, no matter how kind his son Matt might be.

As the series moves into Ripple Effect and The Deep End, the story widens. Shaye’s world now includes elite training schedules, Olympic dreams, and a marriage that has to survive long distance seasons and constant security worries. Old enemies do not simply disappear because the government gave her a new identity. Each race and each public appearance carries the risk that someone from her past will recognize her and finish what was started years before.

Across all three books Abramson leans into the tension between normal life and constant threat. Shaye wrestles with questions most people never have to ask, how much truth she can share, whether loving someone makes him a target, and what it costs to keep standing up when fear would be easier. The Whitmore family brings in political stakes and a web of powerful allies, but they also bring all the mess of real relationships.

Readers who start here get an early look at themes and characters that echo throughout Abramson’s later Saint Squad and Guardian novels. The Undercurrents books mix sports drama, clean romance, and page turning suspense, all centered on one woman’s fight to claim both safety and joy in a life that was never meant to be simple.
