Series background & context

Dream's Edge steps away from modern intelligence work and lands on ice rinks and ballet stages in the late twentieth century. This series traces two generations of athletes whose lives are shaped by the Cold War, the pressure of elite competition, and the choices their parents made long before they were born.

The prequel novella Dancing to Freedom is set in 1960s Canada, where Soviet ballerina Katerina Petrova tours with her company under constant watch. Her hotel balcony backs up to that of Canadian hockey player Robert Marcell, and what begins as a shy connection turns into a life changing decision. Their romance has to overcome suspicious minders, political consequences, and the reality that defecting is far easier said than done.

Later novellas like Broken Dreams and The Best Mistake fill in the years between generations, following coaches, parents, and friends whose lives orbit the rink. Grief, second chances, and unexpected love all take their turn on the page.

The main novels, starting with An Unlikely Pair, focus on Amaliya Marcell and Tyler Linden. Amaliya is a gifted ballerina and the daughter of a famous hockey coach and a former Soviet dancer. Tyler is a pairs skater whose career has been derailed by his sister’s retirement. When he spots Amaliya skating for fun, he takes the wild risk of asking a ballerina to become his partner. Together they chase national titles and eventually Olympic gold in Dreams of Gold and Worlds Collide, all while dealing with intense training, injuries, and complicated family ties.

Woven through the competition scenes are real historical tensions. Soviet coaches, defectors who left people behind, and the ever present question of who might be watching from the stands all add weight to the jumps and lifts. At the same time, the series is deeply personal, about parents learning to let go, young adults figuring out what they truly want, and people deciding whether love is worth the sacrifice that top level sport demands.

For readers who enjoy sports stories, slow build romance, and a hint of spy craft in the background, Dream's Edge offers a different but connected corner of Abramson’s wider world.
