Told You So

by Kristen Heitzmann

2015

When romance author Grace Evangeline clashes with brooding playwright Devin Bressard over adapting her novel for Broadway, their battle of wit quickly turns into something deeper. As attraction collides with past wounds and real world fallout, both must face what grace and commitment really cost.

Series background & context

The Told You novels drop readers into the bright, demanding world of New York theater, where faith, fame, and messy real life keep colliding. At the center are characters who make their living with words and performance, yet struggle to say what matters most when the lights are off and no one is watching.

The first book, Told You So, introduces bestselling romance novelist Grace Evangeline and serious playwright Devin Bressard. Grace believes stories should leave readers hopeful, with big feelings and even bigger happily ever afters. Devin writes razor sharp, emotionally brutal plays that critics love and Grace’s fans would probably hate. When she tries to convince him to adapt one of her novels for Broadway, the meeting goes spectacularly wrong, complete with a glass of sweet tea in his face.

What starts as a battle of ego and artistic vision turns into something deeper as Grace and Devin are pushed to work together. Their banter is fast, funny, and often flirty, but it is also a shield for two people carrying private wounds. As the story moves from light comedy into heavier territory, both have to reckon with past choices, public expectations, and what it would really cost to live out the ideals they put on the page.

Told You Twice widens the stage while staying in the same circle of friends. This time the focus is on Alexis “Exi” Murphy, a warm, creative woman who designs highly personal Grace Evangeline style weddings. She is engaged to the safe, reliable man everyone approves of when she crosses paths with Bo Corrigan, a gifted stage star and spokesmodel whose charm barely hides a soul worn thin.

Bo brings a very different kind of chaos. His past mistakes and old debts have drawn the attention of violent people, and his new connection with Exi puts a target on her as well. The story moves from glittering marquees to the grittier streets and back rooms of the city as the two of them navigate both romantic tension and real danger. Through it all, Grace and Devin appear as friends and anchors, tying the books together into a shared ensemble.

Across the series Heitzmann balances swoony, high energy romance with honest looks at shame, temptation, and the slow work of healing. The content pushes closer to general market sensibilities than much inspirational fiction, yet the through line remains one of grace, forgiveness, and a God who keeps pursuing people even when they are tired of themselves.

You can read either novel on its own, but starting with Told You So gives the best sense of the relationships and running jokes that carry into Told You Twice. Together, they form a two book arc that will appeal to readers who enjoy quickfire dialogue, backstage drama, and love stories that do not flinch from the fallout of real world choices.
