Author bio

Kristen Heitzmann was born in Colorado in 1959 and grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by ponderosa pines, books, and music. That landscape, with its steep trails and changing light, shows up again and again in her fiction. From the beginning she was the kid who always had a story going, sketching characters, humming melodies, and imagining what might happen just beyond the next bend in the trail.

Raised in an academic, arts loving family, she read widely and learned early how powerful stories could be. She went on to study English and creative writing at the University of Colorado, later adding more craft classes that helped turn her love of stories into a focused vocation.

She married Jim, settled near the mountains she loved, and for a season poured most of her energy into music ministry, church life, and homeschooling their four children.

Writing moved from dream to reality while she was teaching those kids at home. In the margins of busy days she drafted a historical novel set on the Colorado frontier, drawing on the ranches, small towns, and Civil War history she had grown up around. That first book became Honor's Pledge, the opening volume in the five book Rocky Mountain Legacy series, and introduced readers to Abbie Martin, Montgomery Farrel, and the rugged West that would anchor much of her early work.

After the success of that series, Heitzmann stayed with historical romance for a while, especially in the Diamond of the Rockies books about Italian heiress Carina DiGratia and the mining town of Crystal, Colorado. Over time, though, her stories edged closer to the present. Contemporary novels like Twilight and A Rush of Wings kept the mountains but invited in new settings, from small Colorado communities to Santa Barbara beaches and even the cliffs and waterfalls of Hawaii.

She is now best known for contemporary romantic and psychological suspense. The Michelli Family novels weave together an Italian American clan in the Bronx and an old Sonoma villa, braiding family secrets with questions of faith, memory, and healing. The Spencer Family books follow brothers Rick and Morgan through business crises, heartbreaking loss, and unexpected second chances. In Redford series titles like Indivisible and Indelible, a quiet Colorado town becomes the stage for stories about addiction, trauma, and the stubborn hope of people who refuse to give up on one another.

Her stand alone suspense novels often push into darker territory. Freefall strands an amnesiac woman on the cliffs of Kauai as she and a wary investigator piece together what happened before the fall. The Edge of Recall centers on a landscape architect who designs labyrinths and must face the nightmares that have chased her since childhood. In Rules of Contact, a medical resident is pulled into a violent underground world and has to decide whom she can trust and what justice looks like when the system fails.

Along the way Heitzmann’s work has quietly collected honors. Secrets won a Christy Award for romance, The Breath of Dawn received a Christy for contemporary romance, and novels such as The Tender Vine, The Still of Night, and Indivisible have been finalists or nominees for major Christian fiction prizes. For many readers, though, the real draw is not the trophies but the way her characters wrestle honestly with fear, guilt, and grace inside very human relationships.

Heitzmann still lives in the Colorado Springs area with Jim, an extended circle of family, and various pets. She is an artist and musician as well as a novelist and has long been involved in worship leading at her church. When she is not at the keyboard, she is often on a mountain trail, letting a new scene unspool in her imagination. The result is a body of work where faith, suspense, romance, and the wildness of the Rockies keep meeting on the page.
