Secrets

by Kristen Heitzmann

2004

Posing as her employee to search for clues, he digs into an old family mystery while falling for the woman whose hard won independence could be shattered by what he discovers.

Series background & context

The Michelli Family series traces an Italian American clan whose roots stretch from a cramped Bronx neighborhood to a sun soaked villa in California wine country. Across three novels, Heitzmann braids together mystery, romance, and generational wounds, asking how much of the past must be uncovered in order for real healing to begin.

In Secrets, musician and chef Lance Michelli adores his grandmother Antonia, who can no longer fully tell the story that haunts her. Urged on by hints and fragments, he travels from New York to Sonoma to investigate an old villa his grandparents once owned. There he runs straight into Rese Barrett, a fiercely independent contractor who has poured everything she has into restoring the property and turning it into an inn.

Lance wheedles his way into a job as Rese’s cook and housekeeper so he can search for documents and clues. Their clashing personalities, cultural backgrounds, and spiritual questions create both friction and attraction. As partial truths about Antonia’s past surface, both Lance and Rese are forced to confront their own fears of vulnerability and what it would mean to rely on God rather than pure grit.

Unforgotten continues the story as Lance and Rese travel back to the Bronx with answers they believe will finally set Antonia free. Instead, Lance discovers that his grandmother’s understanding of that long ago night is incomplete and colored by trauma. She sends him on another journey, this time one that digs even more deeply into the Michelli family’s history. The search draws Rese further into the noisy warmth of Little Italy and pushes Lance into painful choices between loyalty, romance, and truth.

By the time Echoes opens, Lance and Rese have turned the Sonoma villa into a refuge for people on the margins. Lance’s sister Sofie, a dancer whose life has been derailed by loss and depression, comes to stay and slowly begins to hope again. A call from her past and the arrival of a foster infant bring in Matt Hammond, a child protection worker who is both wary of and drawn to this unconventional household. Through Sofie’s story, the series looks squarely at mental illness, self worth, and the possibility of starting over when you feel beyond repair.

Throughout the Michelli books, food, music, and strong family ties give warmth to heavy themes. The novels are rich with sensory detail, Italian phrases, and scenes of both chaos and tenderness around crowded tables. Reading Secrets, Unforgotten, and Echoes in order allows the full arc of Antonia’s story, Lance and Rese’s relationship, and Sofie’s hard won healing to unfold in a satisfying way.
