Series background & context

Diamond of the Rockies is a sweeping historical series that pulls an Italian wine country heiress into the rough, glitter hungry world of a Colorado mining town. Through Carina DiGratia’s eyes, readers see both the allure and the cost of chasing independence, justice, and love in the 19th century American West.

In The Rose Legacy, Carina leaves her sheltered life in Sonoma, California, driven by equal parts heartbreak and determination. Betrayed in love and eager to prove herself, she buys a house in the boomtown of Crystal, sight unseen, and arrives to find a place far harsher than she imagined. Crystal is full of miners, opportunists, and women with limited choices, and the only thing that truly matters is what can be pulled from the ground.

Two men quickly mark Carina’s new life. Quillan Shephard is a taciturn, capable miner with a painful past and a wary faith. Another suitor appears polished and attentive, offering the kind of security Carina was taught to value. As she navigates friendships, business ventures, and town politics, she must sort out appearances from reality and decide what sort of legacy she wants to build in a place that chews people up.

Sweet Boundless picks up after Carina and Quillan marry. Now Carina, bearing her husband’s name and still very much herself, longs to make a true home in Crystal. Quillan, haunted by old wounds, pulls away to wrestle with his history, leaving her lonely and restless. Out of that ache she opens a restaurant that becomes both her creative outlet and a gathering place for miners’ families living on the edge.

Her compassion for the poorest in town draws admiration from some and resentment from others. When violence strikes as payback for her kindness, Carina’s hard won sense of self is shaken, and Quillan is forced to confront whether he will remain trapped by bitterness or lean into the forgiveness he talks about.

In The Tender Vine, grief pushes Carina to long for the safety of her childhood vineyards. She and Quillan undertake the long journey back to Sonoma, hoping that her close knit family and familiar ground will offer rest. Instead, they walk into unresolved tensions, old expectations, and a web of family history that tests their marriage in new ways. The contrast between the rugged freedom of Crystal and the ordered beauty of wine country throws their choices into sharp relief.

Across the trilogy, Heitzmann lingers on sensory detail: the dust and noise of the mines, the smell of bread and coffee in Carina’s kitchen, the rows of vines glowing at sunset. Yet beneath the romance and historical color lies a steady exploration of calling, sacrifice, and what it means to love someone fully, flaws included. Reading the books in order allows Carina and Quillan’s relationship, and Carina’s own growth from impulsive heiress to grounded woman of faith, to unfold layer by layer.
