Author bio
Timothy Ellis is an Australian science fiction and fantasy writer who lives on the Gold Coast in Queensland. He writes the kind of stories you can see coming out of a lifetime spent loving space opera, fantasy, games, and big ongoing universes. He also shares his workspace, at least in theory, with a cat, plus a collection of science fiction toys and references that make it pretty clear where his head usually is.
That love of the genre came first.
He has said that he spent years reading and watching science fiction and fantasy, and even played an old text-based Star Trek game on a university mainframe before home computers became ordinary things. Later, starting in 2004, he wrote guides for the Egosoft X Universe games, including versions of the X3 Handbook. That background shows up all over his fiction. His books like ships, fleets, systems, tactics, and the practical side of space travel.
Before writing novels full time, he did a little bit of everything. Over the years he worked as a farm worker, an antique dealer, a computer programmer, a systems analyst, an operations manager, and a retail store owner. That mixed work history helps explain why his books often feel interested in how people actually do their jobs, whether they are fighter pilots, commanders, traders, healers, or the person stuck solving the problem nobody else wants.
There was another turn in his life, too. After leaving the business world, Ellis became deeply involved in spiritual practice and healing work. Feng Shui led him into Buddhism, Taoist ideas, karma, meditation, and wider forms of spiritual exploration. He also wrote nonfiction in that space, including the The Wisdom of the Ages books and other spiritual titles. That side of his life never stayed separate from the fiction for long.
It all came together in Hero at Large, the book that launched his long running Hunter universe in 2015. From there he kept building outward with series such as Admiral of Gaia, Yesterday's Spacemage, Midshipman Spacemage, Old Magic, and Dragon Rider. Readers tend to come to Ellis for the same mix again and again: fleet action, strong continuity, AIs with personality, mages in spaceships, dragons in wartime, and characters who keep taking on more responsibility than they ever planned.
He is also a very prolific writer.
That matters with Ellis, because his books are designed to talk to one another. A reader can start with Jon Hunter in The Hunter Legacy, jump to the AI and political storylines in A.I. Destiny, or go straight to the rank climbing military arc of Imperium Spacemage. The appeal is not just one hero or one trilogy. It is the feeling of entering a huge connected setting where different corners of the same universe keep lighting up.
He has also spoken openly about living with frequent migraines, which can make any sort of neat writing schedule difficult. Even so, he has kept producing books at an impressive rate, expanding his fiction while still writing spiritual nonfiction as well.
These days, he is best known for the ever-growing Hunter Imperium universe, but the same core interests run through almost everything he writes: duty, growth, hidden power, second chances, and what happens when ordinary routines suddenly open into something much bigger.
