Author bio
Tim Myers has been writing mysteries since 1993, and he did not begin with a giant novel or a grand career plan. He began small. His first published story, My Late Aunt Hattie, was an 800 word piece that mixed comedy, mystery, and the supernatural. It appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and later found its way into an anthology, which tells you a lot about the path he took, short fiction first, then a long, steady climb into novels.
That beginning matters.
A lot of writers talk about loving books. Myers' story is more practical than that. He built a career by writing, and then writing more, across magazines, anthologies, traditional publishers, ebooks, and a surprising number of pen names. Over time he became an Agatha Award nominee, a New York Times bestselling author, and a regular presence in the cozy mystery world. He has also written more than eighty short stories, with multiple Derringer Award nominations for his shorter work.
If you have read widely in cozy mysteries, you may already know him even if you did not realize it. Myers has written under several names, including Jessica Beck, Chris Cavender, Elizabeth Bright, Melissa Glazer, Casey Mayes, and D.B. Morgan. That is not just a publishing footnote. Each name tends to carry a slightly different corner of his work, from culinary cozies to craft themed mysteries to puzzle driven stories and darker suspense.
His best known books are probably the ones written as Jessica Beck, especially the long running Donut Shop Mysteries that begin with Glazed Murder. Those books follow Suzanne Hart, a donut shop owner in April Springs, North Carolina, and they have the things many readers come to cozies for, a warm small town setting, a reliable cast, quick pacing, and murders that stay readable without turning brutal. Under the same name he also wrote the Classic Diner books, starting with A Chili Death, plus the Ghost Cat and Cast Iron Cooking series.
He has a knack for businesses that sound comforting until somebody dies in one.
Under his own name, Myers wrote the Lighthouse Inn Mysteries, which start with Innkeeping with Murder, and the craft centered Candlemaking and Soapmaking series, beginning with At Wick's End and Dead Men Don't Lye. As Chris Cavender, he moved into pizza with A Slice of Murder. Across all of them, you can feel the same interests returning, close communities, working people, family tensions, and ordinary places that suddenly become crime scenes.
Place matters in his books. So does routine. Inns, diners, donut shops, card stores, pottery studios, and candle shops are not just gimmicks in the background. They give the stories their rhythm. People come in, gossip travels, grudges simmer, and the main character usually has a real reason to know the victim, the suspect, or the mess that follows.
He has also written beyond cozy mysteries, including suspense, paranormal stories, middle grade adventures, and writing advice. Even with that range, the through line is pretty clear. Myers likes puzzles, pressure, and characters who have to keep going when life gets inconvenient, strange, or dangerous.
These days, he lives with his family near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a landscape that shows up again and again in the atmosphere of his fiction. That feels fitting. His books tend to work the same way the mountains do in the background of a small town, always there, shaping the view even when the story is busy with something else.
