She also has Cleo, her cat, plus an overprotective family, which helps keep the tone warm even when the bodies start turning up. Sarah feels like someone with a real everyday routine, and that matters in a cozy. The murder interrupts a recognizable life instead of creating one from scratch.

Food still anchors the books.

In Slow Cooked Murder, one of Sarah's students is killed after a class at the community college, which puts both her reputation and her students at risk. In Simmering Death, a cooking competition turns ugly when one of the judges, and one of Sarah's harshest critics, is murdered on stage. Both cases fit the series well because they grow out of food related community events without turning the books into recipe manuals.

The appeal here is partly the contrast between Sarah's calm interest in slow cooking and the sudden urgency of the cases around her. Slow cookers suggest patience, planning, and domestic comfort. Murder does not. Putting those two moods together gives the books a nice little jolt.

This is a short series, but it shows another version of what Myers does well, ordinary people with a practical skill, local ties, and just enough stubbornness to keep following clues after the police would rather they stopped.
