Author bio

Jessica Beck is one of the pen names used by mystery writer Tim Myers, and it fits him well. Under that name he writes cozy mysteries full of food, small businesses, tangled relationships, and murders that upset the rhythm of everyday life. The Beck books, especially the long running Donut series, are often the doorway readers use to find the rest of his work.

He writes fast, but the stories still feel lived in.

Myers has said that he started writing mysteries in 1993. His first published short story, "My Late Aunt Hattie," blended comedy, mystery, and the supernatural, and it appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine before later being reprinted in an anthology. That early mix tells you a lot about the books that followed. He likes a clean puzzle, a touch of oddness, and characters who feel like they belong to a place.

Across his own name and several pen names, he has published a very large shelf of fiction with major publishers and on his own. The plain facts are enough. He has a New York Times bestseller credit, an Agatha Award nomination, three Derringer finalist nods for short mystery fiction, repeated appearances on the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association bestseller list, and more than a million books sold.

As Jessica Beck, he keeps returning to the kinds of places that seem comforting until something goes terribly wrong. Glazed Murder introduces Suzanne Hart and her donut shop in April Springs, North Carolina. A Chili Death moves into diner territory with Victoria, Greg, and the Charming Moose. Midnight Paws adds a ghost cat to the equation, while Cast Iron Will follows twins running a cast iron store and grill. The settings change, but the appeal stays steady, readers get a mystery to solve and a town they want to revisit.

Food matters here.

Donuts, diner plates, cast iron cooking, and other homely details give these books their texture, but they are never only about recipes. Myers likes shop owners, exes, old grudges, family businesses, local politicians, and busybodies who know too much. Many of the stories are set in North Carolina, often in small towns or mountain country, and that gives the books a grounded feeling even when the plots get playful or a little spooky.

He also writes well beyond the Jessica Beck name. Under Tim Myers, readers will find the Lighthouse mysteries, the Candlemaking mysteries, the Soapmaking mysteries, and other series that keep the same friendly mystery energy while trying new businesses, new towns, and new sleuths. That wider body of work helps explain why the Beck novels can move easily from warm and funny to tense and eerie, then settle back into comfort again.

Public biographical details are fairly light, but Myers has described living with his family near the Blue Ridge foothills of North Carolina, and that landscape shows up again and again in his fiction. It feels like home because, in a real sense, it is. If you like cozy mysteries with a strong sense of place, a quick pace, and characters who keep showing up for one another, Jessica Beck is an easy author to stay with for a long time.
