Author bio

Tim Akers was born on December 12, 1972, and grew up in rural North Carolina. He has described himself as the only son of a theologian, which feels fitting for a writer who keeps coming back to faith, doubt, old gods, and the people caught between them.

Chicago was the next big turn.

He moved there for college and stayed, building a life that runs on books, bad weather, and city energy. He has long made Chicago home, and he often talks about it with dry affection, the winters, the traffic, the hot dogs, all of it.

Before the novels took over, Akers was publishing short fiction and doing game work. The Veridon stories he started sketching in 2006 grew into his debut novel, Heart of Veridon, and later into the collection Bones of Veridon. That early path matters, because you can still feel it in his fiction: he likes worlds with history, systems, factions, and rules that push back.

He writes like someone who enjoys both maps and momentum.

Akers' books move around the fantasy and science fiction shelf, but they share a certain shape. The Horns of Ruin throws a fallen paladin into a city of dead gods, chain guns, and conspiracy. The Pagan Night, The Iron Hound, and The Winter Vow widen the lens into war, religion, and political fracture, but they never lose sight of the bruised people at the center.

Then there is his lighter, more openly playful side. In Knight Watch and Valhellions, he takes secret-war urban fantasy and runs it through Ren fairs, conventions, dragons, necromancers, and just enough absurdity to keep things lively. Readers who like fantasy that remembers to have fun tend to land there fast.

More recently, he has kept experimenting. Wraithbound opens the Spiritbinder Saga with hard magic, family disgrace, and a boy who binds himself to the wrong supernatural force. Newer projects like Servant of a Pale Sword and The Last Dragon Knight show the same love of high-stakes fantasy, but in a tighter, punchier mode.

He likes broken heroes, dangerous vows, and cities that feel one bad day from collapse.

Across the catalog, you see the same interests again and again: religion as a living force, old power colliding with new machinery, loyalty under pressure, and characters who have to fight their way through systems bigger than themselves. Even when the setup is wild, steampunk cogs, demon-haunted war fronts, soul-binding magic, the emotional pull is pretty direct. Somebody is in over their head. Somebody made a promise. The bill has come due.

These days he is still in Chicago with his wife, still writing, and still very much the kind of author who can move from epic fantasy to cyberpunk to game material without seeming lost. He has also mentioned hobbies like pewter miniatures and fountain pens, which tracks. His books often feel built by someone who enjoys both craft and mess, the careful structure, and the moment when everything catches fire.
