Knight Watch Books in Order

Knight Watch asks a very simple question and then has a lot of fun with the answer: what if the modern world really did need a secret order to handle dragons, trolls, necromancers, and every other problem that should not fit inside ordinary life? Tim Akers builds the series around John Rast, a guy who expects mock battles and weekend heroics, then gets thrown headfirst into the real thing.

The first book starts with a Ren Faire duel that stops being pretend the moment John's opponent turns into an actual dragon. From there, the series opens up into a hidden layer of the world where Knight Watch stands between everyday life and mythic disaster. The organization has a job to do, but it also has paperwork, weird office politics, and the kind of field assignments that make you question every career choice.

That balance is the charm. These books are lighter on their feet than Akers' darker epics, but they are not throwaway comedies. The danger is real. So are the monsters. John just happens to face them in settings that feel delightfully current, conventions, cosplay competitions, roadside weirdness, and secret networks buried under ordinary America.

Then the world gets bigger. Valhellions throws John into a mess involving necromancy, occult weapons, and Valkyries with apocalyptic plans. The Eccentrics widens the series again by bringing in clockwork threats and a steam-powered sister outfit led by the eighth incarnation of Nikola Tesla. The result is urban fantasy with a strong pulp engine and a grin on its face.

This is a series for readers who like their fantasy fast, funny, and packed with creature-feature energy. Akers clearly enjoys the toy box here, but he also knows how to give John Rast enough vulnerability to keep the story grounded.
