Series background & context

At the center of The Burn Cycle is Veridon, a huge terraced city of cogs, faith, smoke, and old power trying to survive new machinery. It is not a clean heroic fantasy setting. It is a place of wrecked airships, criminal favors, church ambition, and families that can ruin you as easily as they can protect you.

The books follow Jacob Burn, a disgraced former pilot from one of the city's old noble lines. By the time the series opens, he has already fallen a long way. He is working around the edges of the underworld, carrying old guilt, and trying not to get crushed by the forces above him. That would be hard enough on its own. Then a strange cog lands in his hands, and suddenly nearly every dangerous faction in Veridon wants something from him.

That is the engine of the series. Burn is always moving, always improvising, and always one bad decision away from disaster. The appeal is the mix of hard-boiled voice and dense steampunk worldbuilding. Airships and cogwork matter here, but so do loyalty, class, religion, and the ways institutions chew people up.

Veridon feels lived in. The Church of the Algorithm, the Council, the criminal networks, and the city's buried history all press on the story at once. Even when the action gets large, the books stay close to Burn and the cost of every bargain he makes.

Heart of Veridon starts the fall. Dead of Veridon pushes Burn deeper into the city's machinery. Bones of Veridon steps sideways and backward, collecting the stories that helped build Veridon in the first place.

If you want steampunk with soot on it, this is a good place to land.
