Series background & context

Through the Fire is an epic fantasy series set in Senkar and centered on Ruethwyn Sylaris, a young elven mage whose life is destroyed in a dragon attack. Her village is burned, her teacher is killed, and survivors are carried away by the dragon Resvarygrath. Among those taken is Anara, the girl Ruethwyn loves.

Ruethwyn is left for dead, but she survives.

That survival is only the beginning. Ruethwyn has to restore herself, learn what she can do, and find the courage to pursue a rescue that often seems impossible. The series follows her journey from devastating loss into a wider world of magic, ancient powers, dangerous rulers, and allies who gradually become essential to her.

The stakes are personal from the first book. Ruethwyn wants Anara back, but the road toward that goal keeps revealing larger threats and deeper mysteries. Her magical training, injuries, fears, and relationships all shape the way she faces those challenges. She is not presented as effortlessly certain. Much of the series is about her growing into the person she needs to be.

The world of Senkar matters here. Different regions, magical traditions, old ruins, and political powers give the books an expansive adventure feel. Yet the story stays anchored in Ruethwyn's point of view and in the people she gathers around her. Romance and found family develop alongside the travel, combat, and magical problem-solving.

The Avatar's Flames starts with the destruction of Ruethwyn's home and her decision to keep going. Queen of Ice and The Obsidian Palace carry the first phase of her quest forward. Later books, Obelisk of Blood, Temple of the Sun, and Circle of Ashes, broaden the conflict and bring the long-running tensions toward a conclusion.

This is a good choice for readers who want an emotional fantasy quest with an elven heroine, dragons, elemental magic, and relationships that grow stronger through repeated setbacks.

Begin with The Avatar's Flames.
