Series background & context

Lilith's Shadow takes place in a superhero world, but its heart is closer to a story about first friendships, romance, and finding a place to belong. Lilith Carpenter is the final creation of Shadowmind, a notorious supervillain. Created in a laboratory and raised with implanted knowledge rather than a normal childhood, she begins the series with little idea how to live in the wider world.

Freedom is not simple when everyone thinks you might be a weapon.

Lilith escapes into a city already shaped by superhuman battles and suspicion. Her creator's legacy puts a target on her back, while the authorities and heroes around her have to decide whether she is a threat, a victim, or something in between. Lilith herself is trying to answer a more basic question: who does she want to be when nobody else gets to decide for her?

The series brings Lilith into contact with other young women, including people who become friends, protectors, teammates, and eventually something more. Their bonds are the real engine of the books. Supervillains, attacks, and city-wide trouble matter, but the story repeatedly returns to everyday acts of care, awkward social learning, and the slow creation of chosen family.

Lilith is powerful and socially inexperienced, which gives the series a balance of action and gentler scenes. She can handle a crisis, but understanding jokes, trust, and her own wants can be harder. That makes her an engaging guide to a setting where the rules are already complicated before superpowers enter the picture.

Born a Queen introduces Lilith's escape and first steps into the superhero community. The later books, from Down with the Queen through Queen's Gambit, continue the same core cast and build on Lilith's relationships, responsibilities, and place in the world. The series is particularly suited to readers who like superhero fiction with lesbian romance and a lot of slice-of-life material between the battles.

There is danger, but the overall pull is hopeful. Lilith and her friends keep trying to make room for a future that feels like their own.

Begin with Born a Queen.
