The White Hawk Books in Order

The White Hawk is a Wars of the Roses saga set in fifteenth-century England, where the rivalry between Lancaster and York turns private loyalties into matters of life and death. The series follows people trying to survive a civil war in which a new king can make yesterday’s ally an enemy.

Revenge opens the story in 1459, when the conflict is beginning to break into open violence. Pilling uses the uncertainty of the period to explore how ordinary soldiers, minor gentry, and families are affected by disputes that begin among the great houses but spread through the whole country.

The later books, including Loyalty, Survival, and Sacrifice, keep returning to the question raised by their titles. Is loyalty owed to a king, a family, a commander, or the people one is trying to protect? In civil war, those answers can conflict, and choosing one can destroy another.

The series does not treat battle as a distant event. Fighting changes property, relationships, travel, and trust. A household can be forced to declare itself before it knows which side will prevail. Pilling’s approach is military and political, but the core remains personal. The White Hawk is about people trying to keep some control over their lives while the crown changes hands and violence keeps returning.
