Leader of Battles is an Arthurian-era historical saga set before Arthur becomes the central figure of legend. It begins in 427, after Roman authority has withdrawn from Britain and the island is exposed to raids, invasion, and rivalry among its own leaders.

Britain needs someone to hold the line.

That person is Ambrosius Aurelianus, a Romano-British soldier with a famous name and little room for private doubt. In Ambrosius, he becomes the leader of Britain’s remaining army while facing Saxon raiders, attacks from the north, and the scheming of the high king Vortigern.

The series treats post-Roman Britain as a fractured, uncertain place rather than a polished kingdom waiting for Camelot. Forts are crumbling, coastal settlements are vulnerable, and leaders who should cooperate often see more advantage in settling old scores. Ambrosius has to fight enemies outside the walls as well as political threats behind them.

Artorius, Gwenhwyfar, Drystan, and Medraut extend the story toward better-known Arthurian names. Pilling uses legend as a starting point, then anchors it in the military and political pressures of the fifth century. The result is less courtly romance and more survival story, with armies, hostages, shifting alliances, and hard-won victories.

The ongoing question is whether the Britons can build a future while their old Roman world is disappearing. Ambrosius and those around him are trying to preserve order, but every success comes with a cost.
