Series background & context
The Bloody Hand Saga begins in the aftermath of 1066, when England has changed hands but the fighting is far from over. The Northman opens with the Norman conquest and follows characters whose lives are reshaped by invasion, dispossession, and the hard work of surviving in a country ruled by new masters.
This is a long historical adventure that keeps moving.
The early books, including The Outlaw and The Exile, stay close to the violence and resentment left by conquest. English resistance, Norman ambition, and old family loyalties all matter, but the series does not treat history as a settled tale. Its people have to make choices with little certainty about who will win or what safety will cost.
As the sequence continues through The Warlord, The Conqueror, and The Varangian, the canvas grows wider. The action reaches beyond England into the connected world of northern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. Warriors can change masters, seek fortune abroad, or find themselves drawn into conflicts that have little to do with the place where they began.
The central pressure is endurance. Characters are tested by war, exile, shifting loyalties, and the pull of family or homeland. Pilling writes the period as physically demanding and politically unstable, with campaigns, raids, court rivalries, and journeys all carrying real risks.
Later installments such as The Dragon, The Crusade, The Caesar, and Axe Lord continue the story into the early twelfth century. The series follows a changing generation rather than remaining locked to one battle or one castle.
Expect a brisk, martial saga with a strong sense of time and place. Start with The Northman, then read in publication order, since the consequences of earlier conflicts and relationships carry forward.
