Series background & context

The Tamuli is a direct sequel to The Elenium, picking up after Sparhawk has saved Queen Ehlana and married her. Instead of resting on their victories, the characters are pulled into trouble far to the east, in the vast Tamul Empire, when strange magic and ancient warriors begin to threaten the stability of the world.

An ambassador arrives begging for help, and soon Sparhawk, Ehlana, their young daughter Danae, and a familiar band of knights and rogues are traveling across continents to the glittering capital of Matherion. There they discover that old gods, forgotten cults, and ruthless human schemers are all using the empire as a chessboard.

Across Domes of Fire, The Shining Ones, and The Hidden City, the stakes widen from local uprisings to continent‑spanning disasters. Monsters out of legend reappear, terrifying luminous beings stalk the countryside, and the jewel‑spirit Bhelliom—locked away at the end of The Elenium—has to be brought back into play despite the risks.

The result is a story that feels bigger and stranger than its predecessor, without losing the familiar voices fans already know.

What anchors the trilogy is still the core group: Sparhawk trying to balance his duty as a knight with his responsibility as a husband and father, Ehlana wielding charm and sharp intelligence in imperial politics, and the goddess Aphrael weaving her own plans through multiple guises. The humor and camaraderie remain strong, but there’s a sense that the characters are now moving on a god‑sized board.

You’ll get the most out of The Tamuli if you’ve already read The Elenium, because the emotional weight depends on knowing who these people were before they ever heard of Tamuli. Taken together, the six books form a single long arc that starts with a poisoned queen and ends with confrontations among gods in a hidden city at the edge of the world.
