5

Guardians of the West

by David Eddings

1987

Years after Torak’s fall, Garion rules peacefully until the Orb warns him to beware Zandramas. A rising bear-cult, political unrest, and the kidnapping of his infant son shatter that peace, sending Garion and his old companions on a new quest into the unknown East.

Series background & context

The Malloreon picks up the story several years after the end of The Belgariad. Garion is now King of Riva, married to Ce’Nedra, and—at least on the surface—living out the happily‑ever‑after promised by prophecy. The five books follow what happens when that neat ending turns out to be only a midpoint.

The first sign of trouble is a warning from the Orb of Aldur: beware of Zandramas. Almost at once, a fanatical cult rises in the north, an assassination attempt strikes at Garion’s family, and his infant son Geran is kidnapped. The new series sends Garion, Belgarath, Polgara, Ce’Nedra, and a familiar group of companions eastward into the vast Mallorean Empire in pursuit of the mysterious Zandramas, the new Child of Dark.

Where The Belgariad was mostly a tour of the western kingdoms, The Malloreon is about crossing enemy territory. The quest trails through war‑torn Cthol Murgos, plague‑stricken imperial capitals, demon‑haunted provinces, and strange island kingdoms where old prophecies hide in local legends. Along the way the party picks up new allies, including the sardonic eunuch Sadi, the assassin Velvet, the giant mute Toth, and eventually Zakath, the emperor who ought to be their deadliest foe.

It’s very much a road novel, just one where the detours involve possessed emperors, demon lords, and dragons.

Tonally, The Malloreon feels like a slightly older sibling to The Belgariad. The jokes and bickering are still there, but Garion is now a husband, a father, and a king, constantly weighing personal choices against the lives of his subjects. Ce’Nedra wrestles with guilt over dragging nations into war, and the sorcerers begin to question what it means to serve prophecies that seem to treat people as chess pieces.

All five books build toward a single moment: a final choosing between Light and Dark that has been foreshadowed since the earliest stories of Torak. For readers, the appeal is less in the abstract cosmic stakes than in watching a now‑familiar group of characters grow up, make mistakes, and keep going anyway. If you come out of Enchanters' End Game wanting more time with Garion and company, The Malloreon is designed to give you that without simply repeating the first series.
