Soul Blade brings the emotional stakes closest to home, especially through the hunt for Eric's sister and the growing sense that saving the world may still mean losing the people closest to you.

If you want the full shape of the world, the prequel novella Dragon Born adds extra background around Enala and the Gold Dragons. It is not required first, but it gives useful context and a little more mythic texture.
