Praegressus Project Books in Order

Praegressus Project is the original version of the story Aaron Hodges later reworked into The Evolution Gene. Here the same core premise unfolds across five shorter books instead of three longer ones, which gives the series a slightly different rhythm. It moves fast, stacks cliffhangers, and lets the crisis build step by step.

The world is a harsh future America where the United States has fallen and the Western Allied States rule through fear. A plague is spreading. Its victims become monstrous beings known as the Chead. In response, the government launches the Praegressus Project, a human-enhancement program that treats unwilling young people as raw material.

Chris and Liz sit at the center of the story. They are taken, caged, experimented on, and forced to survive systems designed to break them. What begins as imprisonment quickly turns into mutation, escape, and then outright war with the authorities that created the disaster. The deeper the series goes, the more obvious it becomes that the state is not protecting humanity so much as using the crisis to tighten control.

The series does not waste time.

Rebirth handles the capture and the first brutal stages of the project. Renegades deals with the aftermath of transformation and survival in the wild. Retaliation, Rebellion, and Retribution push the story outward into resistance, revenge, and a much larger struggle over what kind of future is still possible. As the Chead grow more dangerous and more organized, the books keep asking whether the monsters outside are really worse than the people in charge.

Because this version is spread over five installments, readers get to sit with the escalation a little more. The losses land differently. The turns in loyalty and trust feel more incremental. There is also more room for the sense of a country steadily coming apart under pressure.

If you enjoy dystopian science fiction with experiments gone wrong, runaway teens, collapsing governments, and an action-heavy pace, Praegressus Project is easy to fall into. And if you already know The Evolution Gene, this earlier version is interesting as a fuller, more serialized take on the same basic nightmare.
