Series background & context

The Alfurian Chronicles is Aaron Hodges doing science fantasy on a big, dramatic scale. The setup starts on Talamh, a world where humanity once thrived, until the alien Alfur conquered it. By the time the story opens, humans are beaten down, watched closely, and expected to serve their immortal rulers without question.

Into that world steps Rydian Holt. He begins as a nobody, just another young man trying to survive, until his mother is tied to a resistance movement and his life gets thrown into the arena. Literally. What follows has some gladiator-story energy early on, with training, survival, and the slow realization that staying alive is not enough anymore.

That is the heart of the series. Rydian is not born powerful in the usual fantasy sense. He has to earn everything the hard way, and every step forward comes with pain, confusion, or a fresh enemy. The Alfur rule through force, but they also control knowledge, especially the truth about the Light, the strange power at the center of the series. As Rydian learns more, the story grows from local survival into something much bigger, involving the past of Talamh, the nature of the Alfur, and the wider universe beyond the planet.

It gets bigger fast.

The first book, Defiant, is the tightest and most grounded, focused on captivity, combat, and rebellion. Guardian opens the world wider, pushing Rydian into the wildlands and deeper into the mystery of the power inside him. By Conquest, the story turns more morally complicated. Old oppressors fall, new powers arrive, and the easy line between hero and enemy starts to blur.

What makes the trilogy work is that it keeps asking hard questions while still moving like an adventure. If one side wins, what kind of peace follows? If your enemy once saved you, what do you owe them? And if your whole world was built on a lie, what do you do with the truth?

Expect alien overlords, strange magic, political reversals, and a hero who keeps being forced to look past simple revenge. It is an action-heavy series, but it does not stay simple for long.
