Author bio
Aaron Hodges was born in 1989 in Whakatane, a small town in New Zealand. He later studied at the University of Auckland, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Geography, followed by a Masters of Environmental Engineering.
For a while, his path looked fairly practical. He worked for two years as an environmental consultant, then decided office life was not going to be the whole story. In 2014 he left that job and set out to travel, a choice that changed both his life and his writing.
A year later, while in Guatemala, he published Stormwielder. That book opened his Sword of Light world and gave him the start of the career readers now know him for.
Since then, Hodges has built a catalogue that moves comfortably between epic fantasy, science fantasy, and dystopian science fiction. Readers who pick up Stormwielder, Oathbreaker, or Warbringer usually find the same strengths showing up again and again: fast-moving plots, clear stakes, big worlds, and characters who have to grow up quickly because the world around them refuses to go easy on them.
He also likes stories where power always costs something. In Defiant, a young man rises against alien overlords on Talamh. In The Genome Project and The Pursuit of Truth, teenagers survive a brutal government experiment in a broken future America. In Warden's Justice, a girl who dreams of joining an honored order learns that the institution she trusted may be part of the problem.
That pattern is a big part of what makes his books feel related, even when the settings change.
Hodges tends to write about outsiders, fugitives, reluctant heroes, and people who are suddenly handed far more responsibility than they asked for. His stories often mix large fantasy or science fiction ideas with immediate, physical problems: escape the prison, survive the wilderness, reach the city, stop the war, protect the people you love. Even when gods, monsters, or strange new powers are involved, the emotional engine is usually personal.
He is not locked into one lane, either. Alongside fantasy and science fiction, he also wrote Solo, a practical guide to traveling the world alone, which makes a lot of sense once you know how much of his own life has been shaped by travel.
According to his author bio, he has traveled through parts of Southeast Asia, India, North and South America, Turkey, and Europe while continuing to sharpen his craft. That sense of motion fits his fiction. His characters are always crossing borders, heading into the unknown, or trying to build a life in places that do not want them there. In a nice bit of symmetry, his own adventures are still going.
