Snowflakes Over The Starfish Café

by Jessica Redland

2021

Hollie has poured her heart into The Starfish Café since inheriting it, using work to mask the grief of losing her family. Jake, a nurse and RNLI volunteer, keeps everyone at arm's length after his own losses. A rain soaked night, a lost dog and a shared loneliness bring them together and slowly open the door to healing.

Series background & context

The Starfish Café series is set on a clifftop just outside the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay, where a small cafe with huge windows looks out over sand, sea and a colony of seals below. It is a place of hot chocolate, comfort food and the kind of friendships that can hold a lot of weight.

In Snowflakes Over The Starfish Café, we meet Hollie, who inherited the café from her mother after a devastating loss. Outwardly she throws herself into keeping her mum's traditions alive, but privately she is still raw with grief and feels stuck in place. Jake, a nurse and RNLI volunteer with his own traumatic past, walks into her life one stormy night with a lost dog called Pickles, and the two slowly begin to lower their guard.

Spring Tides at The Starfish Café picks up as winter melts into spring. Hollie and Jake are building a life together when an unwelcome visitor threatens the future of the café and everything Hollie has worked for. Running alongside their story is that of Tori, a woman escaping a damaging relationship and carrying long buried secrets, and Finley, who has scars of his own. Their paths cross at the café, where cautious conversations grow into something gentler and more hopeful.

By Summer Nights at The Starfish Café, Hollie and Jake are planning a summer wedding and hoping for a settled future, only to find themselves facing news that shakes those plans. At the same time, single mum Kerry, who works at the café, is forced to confront the past when the father of her four children reappears after years away. The book explores co parenting, forgiveness and the fear of letting someone hurt you twice.

Throughout the trilogy, the Starfish Café itself is as important as any character. The view across the bay, the rituals around Christmas decorations, the hum of regulars and RNLI crew members dropping in after training all create a strong sense of community. Heavy subjects such as bereavement, infertility and trauma are balanced with humour, seaside charm and the reassurance that these characters are surrounded by people who care.

Although each book has a complete emotional arc, the series is best read in order so you can see how Hollie, Jake and their circle grow from strangers carrying heavy loads into a chosen family anchored by one small café on the cliff.
